CLUJ INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION 2019:
MUSIC, EMOTION AND ENERGY FOR FLUTE AND CLARINET COME TO CLUJ
From 7th to 14th July 2019 the international flute and clarinet competition returns to Cluj, this time under a new name, but with the same energy and with an unprecedented level of international participation.
CLUJ INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION 2019 is the new name of the Gheorghe Dima International Music Competition held biannually in Cluj for pairs of wind instruments. It has been organised by the same committee since 2011, and has been under the Notes & Ties Cultural Association’s umbrella since 2015.
The flute and clarinet competition in Cluj has become a reference for musicians all over the globe, and is one of the most important music competitions in the world. The first edition with this name awaits a record number of participants in its two sections: flute and clarinet. Over 200 musicians in 40 countries have registered for the competition.
Members of the two juries are themselves young exceptional musicians. They are performers admired all over the world, and yet in age they are practically colleagues: Seiya Ueno (Japan – one of the most acclaimed flautists in the world), Sébastian Jacot (Switzerland – principal flute in Gewandhaus Leipzig), Loïc Schneider (France – member of Suisse Romande), Irina Stachinskaya (Russia – famous soloist and former member of the Moscow Philharmonic), Alexis Roman (France – principal flute in Jyväskylä Sinfonia, Finland), Eduard Belmar (Spain – solo flute in the Frankfurt Orchestra), Virgile Aragau (France – principal flute in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Opera in Marseille), Carlos Ferreira (Portugal – principal clarinet in Orchestre National de Lille), Giovanni Punzi (Italy – principal clarinet in the Copenhaga Philharmonic Orchestra), Sergey Eletskyi (Russia – principal clarinet in the National Russian Orchestra), Tibor Reman (Romania/Germany – principal clarinet in Staatskapelle Berlin), Damien Bachmann (Switzerland – principal clarinet in CHAARTS Chamber Artists Lausanne), Sérgio Fernandes Pires (Portugal – principal clarinet in Musikkollegium Winterthur), Han Kim (South Korea – co-principal clarinet in the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra), and Răzvan Poptean (Romania – principal clarinet in the Romanian National Symphony Orchestra).
The two sections of the competition will take place simultaneously: flautists will be in the concert hall of the Music Academy, while clarinetists will be treated to Auditorium Maximum, the concert hall of Babeș-Bolyai University.
All rounds of the competition are open to the public, and entry is free throughout. In addition, you can tune in to our live stream on livestreamromania.ro or on Facebook.
Flute and clarinet lovers are welcome to the exhibitions of instruments and accessories presented by Wiener Flötenwerkstatt, Buffet Crampon and their partners. Powell flutes and a fantastic selection of Buffet Crampon clarinets will be on display. Young flautists and clarinettists from high schools all over the region have also been invited to watch the competition rounds and the masterclasses.
Besides the competition proper, contestants will be able to take part in valuable masterclasses held by jury members, while the public in Cluj will be able to enjoy two exceptional concerts presented by the Transilvania State Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Tiberiu Soare. The first, on July 7th at 8pm, will be a tour de force with sensational solo performances from the dynamic jury members. On Sunday, July 14th at 8pm it will be over to the competition winners to showcase their mastery with the two Mozart concertos: the Flute Concerto in G major KV 313 and the Clarinet Concerto in A major KV 622.
